1.The meeting was opened by Dr. ter Haar who welcomed
the participants.
2.Prof. Wu described the organization
for the 1st International Workshop on
the Application of HIFU in Medicine being
held in Chongqing (May 10th-12th). 96
papers had been received, of which 45
had been accepted. 150 delegates were
attending the meeting from 9 countries.
In China, almost attendees are clinicalphysicians
who are mainly involved in surgery,
oncology,diagnostic radiology, interventional
radiology and radiotherapy,Prof. Wu was
congratulated on the work he had done.
3.There was a discussion about
the possibility of establishing an international
society for HIFU. Prof. Mason suggested
that the remit should be broadened to
include all aspects of therapeutic ultrasound.
It was agreed that such a society should
be formed, and that it should be called
the International Society for Therapeutic
Ultrasound (ISTU).
Dr. ter Haar was proposed and accepted as President. Prof.
Wu agreed to be secretary and to hold the Societys secretariat in
Chongqing. Prof. Wang agreed to be treasurer.
It was agreed that the Societys activities would include :
Organisation of meetings
Organisation of an Abstract service via its website
The setting up of a members email mailing list whereby questions
of mutual interest may be aired.
A number of immediate tasks
were identified:
To identify further
potential members of the Board to represent
further aspects of Therapeutic Ultrasound.
To set up a website
for the Society.
To circulate a draft
constitution
To compile an email
list of potential members.
4.Prof. Crum offered to host the
2nd meeting of ISTU in Seattle, USA, July
29th - Aug 1st 2002. His offer was gratefully
accepted. He said that he hoped to keep
this meeting small (100-150 participants).
